Challenges Encountered by Parents and Teachers in Handling Children with Mental Retardation

Manivannan, M., & Premila, K. S.
ABSTRACT
Teachers have more responsibilities than anyone else to cater to the needs of disabled children. Dedication and determination are essential to serve the disabled community. Without commitment, they do injustice to the profession. Parents’ roles are equally crucial because factors such as social stigma and lack of awareness about developmental milestones affect the upbringing of a child with mental retardation. Parents must be educated to support these children properly. Many parents experience psychological distress upon learning their child is mentally retarded. Motivated by their experience in special education, the investigators studied the challenges faced by both teachers and parents in handling children with mental retardation.
