Development of Working Memory Skills among Sixth Standard Students

ABSTRACT
Previous research demonstrates a strong link between working memory and scholastic attainment. The present study aims to improve working memory using a modified version of Dr. S. Malathi’s (2004) working memory training module. Three hundred sixth-standard students aged eleven were tested on phonological loop, visuo-spatial memory, and central executive components of working memory. Achievement tests in English and Mathematics were constructed and validated for this research. Fifty students identified with low working memory skills were selected for an experimental study. Findings show a significant relationship between working memory skills and performance in English and Mathematics. The working memory training module significantly improved phonological loop functions, visuo-spatial memory, central executive functioning, and academic achievement. The results highlight strong implications for classroom instructional practices.
