Academic Stress among High School Students
Merlin Therasa, M.
ABSTRACT
In today’s competitive academic environment, students face numerous challenges such as
examination anxiety, lack of motivation to attend classes, and difficulty in understanding
subject matter, which may hinder their academic performance. Academic stress is a major
source of stress among adolescents. Stress is defined as the body’s non-specific response
to demands or disturbing events in the environment. While excessive stress hampers learning,
an optimal level of stress can enhance learning ability. The present study aims to examine
whether significant differences exist in academic stress among high school students with
respect to region and type of school. A simple random sampling technique was adopted, and
the sample comprised 500 high school students from Chennai district. Data were analysed
using critical ratio and one-way analysis of variance. The findings reveal a significant
difference in academic stress based on region, whereas no significant difference was found
based on type of school.
