Professional Commitment among Student Teachers

Chelvi, S., & Ponmalini, T.
ABSTRACT
Teachers are the axle of the entire educational system; they are the pillars of society and the nation. To build these pillars effectively, there is a pressing need for strong training during teacher preparatory courses. Teacher education colleges play an imperative role in equipping student teachers with confidence and professional commitment.

The major objectives of this study were to analyse whether a significant difference exists in the professional commitment of student teachers with respect to their subject specialization and educational qualification. Hypotheses were framed accordingly. The study focused on B.Ed. trainees as the sample. A total of 1210 student teachers were selected from 18 B.Ed. colleges using the normative survey method.

The investigator developed a five-point scale to assess professional commitment. The t-test was used to analyze the collected data. Findings revealed that student teachers possess a moderate level of professional commitment. No significant difference was observed with respect to educational qualification. However, a significant difference was found with respect to subject specialization, wherein U.G. qualified student teachers scored higher than P.G. qualified student teachers.

The study suggests that innovative programmes should be incorporated to prepare student teachers for their professional responsibilities. The curriculum must be designed to enhance professional commitment, reflecting positively in their behaviour.
